I climbed a path and from the top looked up-stream towards Chile. I could see the river, glinting and sliding through the bone-white cliffs with strips of emerald cultivation either side. There was no sound but the wind….

Expedition Cost & Timeframe
The cost of this two-week adventure philanthropy expedition is $3,990. The price does not include international airfare to and from Argentina. The price includes lodging, most meals and the mountain bikes, kayaks and horses we will be using to explore Patagonia, as well as full preparation and planning of the volunteer project. The expedition begins in Buenos Aires on Feb. 20 and ends in the city on Mar. 5.

Our Volunteer Project
Following our 9-day exploration of Patagonia, the Roadmonkey expedition team will spend 4 days in Buenos Aires building either a community playground or an organic farm, in cooperation with our non-profit partners Voluntario Global and Buenos Aires Volunteer. The project will benefit an impoverished community or neighborhood in Buenos Aires. We’ll have the chance to see all aspects of South America’s most fascinating city.

Patagonia Expedition, Feb. 20-Mar. 5, 2011
Explore Patagonia wine country + build an organic farm in Buenos Aires
For 8 days, we’ll explore Patagonia’s emerging wine country by mountain bike, horseback and kayak, seeking out tastings in some of the most spectacular geography on the planet. From there, we fly south, to explore southern Patagonia, hiking one of region’s towering blue-ice glaciers. Then, for 4 days in Buenos Aires, we’ll build a playground or a revenue-generating organic farm for a community in need.
This adventure philanthropy expedition will be Roadmonkey’s third to Latin America and first to Patagonia.

Expedition Route & Itinerary
The Patagonia adventure philanthropy expedition begins Sunday, Feb. 20, in Buenos Aires, at whatever pace suits you, following your overnight arrival from abroad. On Monday, we take a short flight into Patagonia’s Lake District, and set up for three days in San Martin de los Andes, our launchpad for three days of horseback, mountain bike and kayak adventure. In the evenings, we’ll take a journey of sorts into Patagonia’s emerging wine country, via wine tastings led by our expedition co-leader, New York based adventure athlete and wine expert Stefani Jackenthal.
From this region, we’ll fly to Patagonia’s southern region, settling into the rugged charm of El Chaltén, a short distance from the most stunning glaciers in Patagonia. More horeseback adventures are possible here, along with hiking the glacier and learning to ice climb.
We’ll then fly back three hours north, back to Buenos Aires, the city in which we’ll complete our 4-day volunteer project. Evenings will be spent exploring the food, nightlife and inspired way of life that has made the city famous.
Lodging & Food
Lodging will be at comfortable, sometimes superior hotels, inns or ranch-style lodges in Buenos Aires or Patagonia. Food will often be typical Argentine cuisine, with vegetarian options at virtually every location.

When To Arrive & Depart
You should fly into Buenos Aires on Saturday, Feb. 19. Arrivals should be no later than early on Sunday, Feb. 20. Note that many flights from North America and elsewhere arrive overnight.
Departures from Argentina should also be scheduled out of Buenos Aires no earlier than late afternoon on Saturday, Mar. 5. Flying out on Sunday is preferable, to allow for an extra day to unwind after the completion of our volunteer project.
